But, if you are an addict, you know that treatment centers are a vital part of the rehabilitation process. Not only do you have to face your addiction head-on, but you also have to deal with the many rules and regulations of the rehab center. But what can and can’t you bring with you when you enter one of these facilities? Here is a list of what is and isn’t allowed in an addiction recovery center.


1. Prescribed Medications

This includes any medications that prescribe to you by a doctor. They must be in their unique containers and clearly labeled with your name.

Be sure to bring enough for the entire length of your stay and a list of the medications and dosages. Make sure that the staff is aware of any allergies or reactions you have to drugs.

2. Insurance Cards / Photo ID

You must bring a photo ID to check into an addiction rehab center. This can be a driver’s license, passport, or state ID.

Your insurance company will require to be contacted as soon as you enter the rehab center. Most insurance companies will not pay for action unless contacted beforehand. Be sure to bring your insurance cards with you so the staff can contact your insurance company and start getting you coverage.

3. Personal Hygiene Products

Personal hygiene products are allowed in addiction recovery center. This includes items like as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant.

Bring enough for the entire extent of your stay. Most rehab centers will have these items available for purchase, but it is always best to bring your own.

4. Clothing

You can bring a limited amount of clothing such as underwear, socks, shirts, pants, and shoes to an addiction treatment center. You should only get enough for a week, as most rehab centers have laundry facilities. Pack appropriate clothing for the climate and activities you will be participating in. For example, if you will be doing a lot of physical activity, make sure to pack comfortable clothing like sweats and sneakers.

5. Electronics

Some addiction recovery centers allow you to bring electronics such as phones, laptops, and tablets. However, each rehab center has different rules about electronics. Be sure to ensure with the staff before bringing any electronics with you.

Not Allowed

1. Illegal Drugs and Alcohol

Illegal drugs and alcohol are not allowed. You will be asked to depart the facility if caught with these substances.

2. Weapons

This includes knives, guns, and any other weapon as you may be a danger to yourself or others.

3. Explosives

Explosives are not allowed. This includes fireworks, dynamite, and any other type of explosive.

4. Hazardous Materials

This includes chemicals, gasoline, and any different kind of hazardous material.

5. Pornography

This includes magazines, videos, and any other type of pornography.

6. Drug Paraphernalia

Drug paraphernalia (pipes, bongs, needles, etc.) is not allowed. You will be asked to leave the ability if caught with any of these items.


Before checking in to an addiction recovery center, be sure to check with the staff about what items are allowed and what items are not allowed. This will help you pack appropriately and avoid any problems during your stay.
