Windows Cannot Communicate With Device Error

Error “Windows cannot communicate with device or resource (primary DNS server)” when trying to connect to the Internet

“Windows cannot communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)” when connecting occur through a wireless or Ethernet connection and cannot access the Net. The reason for this is that your device is not looking for Lesley’s DNS entries but instead connects to a static DNS server outside of Lesley’s network.

The steps below allow your computer to find a DNS server in the Lesley system and successfully connect to the network.

What is preventing Windows from communicating with the device or the resource error?

There are three common causes for this error to occur. You have outdated network drivers, misconfigured settings, or problems connecting with the DNS server you are using. Many users report issues with proxy servers, which can also lead to this error message. Before trying any of our methods, try disabling your proxy server to see if you can regain your internet connection.

If you have a restricted internet connection (university, work, public wifi, etc.), it is better not to change the settings, as this can also cause an error. These connections use different locations and models from home connections. It can cause configuration conflicts, preventing you from signing in.

Fix the problem: Windows cannot communicate with the device or resource

We use the Internet for different things that it is now part of our daily life. Having problems with your internet connection can be one of the most frustrating things.

You can diagnose the error using the Windows Network Diagnostic Tool. After the tool finishes looking for problems, it returns the error “Windows cannot communicate with the device or the primary DNS server for the resource).”

3 Best Solutions for the error

Solution 1:

  1. Tap the Start icon, then tap Control Panel.
  1. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  • What you view when you click the Network and Sharing Center icon differs depending on which view your computer configure in.
  • See A – Right-click Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection, whichever connection you are trying to access, and then click Properties.
  • See B – Click the Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection link, depending on the network you are trying to connect.
  1. Click on Properties in the Local Area Connection Status window that appears.
  2. In the Network tab, click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPX4) item and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain a DNS server address – both to be automatically chosen. Press the button, OK.
  4. Launch your browser and enter your credentials to connect to the network.
  5. If you still cannot connect after changing the DNS settings, you may need to restart your computer.

Solution 2: Use command prompt to reset connection settings

We can try another workaround that will force your computer to remove IP and DNS settings. These settings may be corrupted or not configured as correctly. We can try to reset them and check if that fixes the problem.
Press Windows + R, type “command prompt” in the dialog box, right-click on the application and click “Run as administrator.”
Once at the elevated command prompt, run the following commands one by one.

ipconfig / flushdns
[ipconfig / registerdns]
[ipconfig / version]
ipconfig / renew

Close the command prompt after running the solutions and restart your computer. Now check if the problem in question exists.

Solution 3: Reset TCP / IP

  • If you receive this error message, your Internet or TCP / IP protocol may corrupt. TCP / IP is one of the main components required by the Windows operating system to connect to the Internet successfully.
  • In this situation, if you can connect to the Internet or the link is working, you will not send the packets. We will try to reset your computer’s TCP / IP and see if it works.
  • We can achieve our goal by downloading a Microsoft tool and running it on the affected computer. Please note that you will need another device with an active internet connection.
  • Go to the official Microsoft website and download the utility.
  • Double-click on the downloaded file, click “Next,” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Alternatively, you can perform the same function by opening an elevated command prompt and running the “netsh int ip reset” command. You can also set a specific path for the log file to create by running “netsh int ip reset c: \ resetlog.txt.”
