What are the Types of Chemical Peels?

1.  Superficial Peels

The superficial peels or light peels are the kinds of skin chemical peels that use milder acids compared to all of the other kinds of peels. They use acids like alpha-hydroxy acid in gently exfoliating your skin, and it usually only reaches the outermost layer of your skin.

When you get this peel, then your dermatologist would be using a cotton ball, brush, or gauze to apply the chemical solution to the targeted area. You might sense a bit of a stinging feeling, and that is when your skin is starting to wither.

A neutralizing solution would be added once they remove the chemical solution.

2.  Medium Peels

If you are looking for a chemical peel that is not too heavy or not too light, then the medium peels are a great solution because it uses trichloroacetic or glycolic acid solution so that they can reach the middle layer of your skin. This is a great middle ground.

During your medium chemical peel procedure, your dermatologist would be using a special sponge to apply the chemical solution, and there may be this blue peel added to the chemical solution.

After the procedure, there would be a cool compress pressed on your skin when your skin begins to whiten. The burning sensation you may feel would last 20 minutes but you would not need any neutralizing solution.

3.  Deep Peels

The deep peels, on the other hand, would have to be the strongest chemical solution out of the three, effectively being able to reach the middle layer of your skin. These peels are usually made out of trichloroacetic acid or phenol.

When doing this procedure, your doctor would use a cotton-tipped applicator so that they could apply the chemical solution on your skin, eventually making your skin turn white or gray. It is going to be made in 15-minute portions because they have to limit the exposure of this acid to your skin.

What Skin Type are Chemical Peels for?

When it comes to the skin type needed for a chemical peel, it could be used on all types of skin generally, but if your skin tone is in a darker shade, then there is a risk of your skin darkening after you get the procedure. This is because if you have naturally darker skin, then you might get post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

You also have to talk to your dermatologist when you have any kind of history of abnormal skin scarring, you would not be able to keep yourself out of the sun while your skin is healing, you have more coloring on your scars, and you have to take any kind of medication for your skin or you have a skin condition. They would assess if getting chemical peels would be the best procedure for you.
